Ch-ch-ch-changes

These past 12 months have been quite an adventure for me, full of life-altering and unexpected changes:

I quit my job as a middle school history teacher.

I married my partner of 11 years.

I went back to grad school with the goal of getting a job in the nonprofit sector. My hope is to either work for a children’s museum or a history museum.

I got knocked up (this was the unexpected part).

I recently gave birth to an adorable little baby boy (more on him in a future post).

And, yes, it happened all in that order.

So, in honor of change, please vote for Gull Wings Children’s Museum to receive a huge chunk of change (a $50K grant) from the Pepsi Refresh Project.  You can vote up to three times a day by registering with Pepsi Refresh, connecting to facebook, and texting in your vote.

Thanks!

Farmer Fresh to You

Last summer, I joined a CSA called Join the Farm that’s located here in Oxnard.  The produce was great, the staff was friendly, but by the end of the summer I was sick and tired of eating kale and spaghetti squash.  In addition to my family being tired of eating the same thing, it was also bothersome how much food was in each box.  There was way too much for my small family to consume unless we all decided to go vegan which will never, ever happen.  I guess I could have gotten a box every other week rather than weekly, or shared with another family, but by the time we realized it was too much the season and my subscription was already over.

Produce from Join the Farm

So, you can probably understand why I got really excited the other day when my friend posted a link to Farmer Fresh to You on facebook. It’s a small company based in Camarillo that delivers local organic produce to your door. What’s so great about them is that their produce comes from a variety of local farmers, you can choose the size of the box you want delivered and what fruits & veggies you want in it, and you can also order other local organic products such as eggs, honey, bread, and more.  Oh, and did I mention that they deliver to your house free of charge?  Yeah, totally cool, and totally great for lazy pregnant people like me who hate going to the grocery store and who forget to wake up to go to the farmer’s market.

Anyway, as soon as I checked out the website I ordered a small box of mixed fruits and vegetables, and on Wednesday I received my first shipment.  I had forgotten what I ordered so it was quite exciting to see what was inside, and for some reason I didn’t remember to take a picture of all the produce (must be the Third Trimester Stupids).  However, I did take a picture of the baby yellow squash, tomatoes, and spinach I sauteed for my chicken soft tacos I made later that day.

Sauteed Veggies from Farmer Fresh to You

All in all, I think Farmer Fresh to You is a great little company that I’ll continue to utilize for the time being.  However, next time I’ll order either a medium or large box to last me 2 weeks rather than one, and save some much needed dinero in the process.

Fresh & Fabulous

Today my best friend, Cher, and I had a spa date planned.  She’s moving up to the Bay Area soon and it had been ages since we hung out (no I lie, we just had lunch last week but before that it had been a while), so we had to spend some quality time together.  Our original plan was to chill out at the Spa at the Ojai Valley Inn.  Unfortunately, the gods decided to have a cry fest on us Southern Californians and we were limited to what we could do indoors at the Spa since I’m pregnant.

Plan B was to drive up to Montecito and hang out at a spiritual center, but we couldn’t recall what the name of the place was or where it was located.  Driving around in circles in the rain looking for something is no fun, especially when you have a hungry pregnant woman full of piss in the car.  Plus, what if La Conchita fell again and we got stuck in Santa Barbara County?  I can’t sleep without my body pillow, and I have a chicken waiting for me to roast it for dinner tonight.

So, we finally decided to go grab a bite to eat at Fresh & Fabulous Cafe in downtown Oxnard.  The cute little restaurant is located in the historic Woolsworth Building, and serves quiches, salads, sandwiches, and baked goods.  On weekdays they are open from 7:30am to 2:30pm with extended hours on the weekend.

When we arrived at the establishment, we bee-lined our way to the counter and placed our order.  Cher had the Sampler Plate which consisted of bruschetta, tabbouleh salad served on romaine lettuce, and fresh made pita chips with hummus.

I ordered the salad and sandwich combo with a cranberry pecan chicken salad and a roasted veggie panini on whole wheat ciabatta.  My meal didn’t look as eye appealing as Cher’s, but it was mighty tasty!

Cher found her sampler plate to be quite tasty, but would have preferred more cracked-wheat in her tabbouleh salad.  I tried a bite, and I have to admit that it was very heavy on the parsley.  It wasn’t bad, but it did taste like it would be a very cleansing appetizer.

My panini was awesome with the veggies roasted to perfection.  The pesto spread complemented well with the sweet and savory vegetables.  I, also, enjoyed the salad which came with a balsamic dressing on the side (this is a plus for me since I hate it when restaurants overdress their salads). I liked how the chicken salad was not overwhelmed by the mayonnaise, and that it was served on a bed of lettuce which gave the salad a nice and light feel to it.

Overall, our experience was good and I definitely plan on going back again to try their quiches as well as the tea service they now offer on Saturdays.
